SLC and RCVA teachers are back at it! Today they participated in campus PD, looking at best practices to collaborate through the PLC process and provide interventions and supports to ALL students through structured RTI. We are so excited for the 2023-2024 school year and can't wait for our students to be here!

Congratulations to Mrs. Britney Austin, Secondary Learning Center teacher of the year! Mrs. Austin's titles include; Math teacher 9-12, SLC lead teacher, PLC team lead, and content creator. Though Mrs. Austin has many titles, she is so much more to SLC. She loves students unconditionally, and holds them all to high standards. She works diligently to ensure she is providing all students with a highly effective and engaging learning experience. This year she has shown growth and commitment to the RSD 3 big “rocks”. High Reliability Schools, Capturing Kids Hearts, and Professional Learning Communities. She has collaborated within the school community to promote alignment of essential standards, alignment of resources, and alignment of student & staff supports. SLC is blessed to have such an amazing educator who sees the best in every student regardless of student circumstances. Thank you Mrs. Austin for all you do! - Secondary Learning Center Staff

Today, SLC students took a trip to Petit Jean for a picnic and to hike the Cedar Falls Trail. While it is a tough hike, the students all hiked hard and did well, experiencing wildlife and nature along the way! Thanks to the rain, the waterfall was flowing well and the students enjoyed seeing it up close. It was a beautiful day to be outside! #SLC #RSD #engagingactivities #ItsAGreatDayToBeACyclone

Today, SLC students participated in a day packed full of STEM activities. They first started with a presentation by RSD Board Member Holli Hall, representing City Corporation, about the water filtration system! Next, students learned about catapults and designed their own in teams. Each team then launched two marshmallows to see which catapult could launch the farthest. After lunch, the activities continued and students built towers with their team using marshmallows and spaghetti noodles, trying to engineer the tallest self-standing tower. Next, the students used materials to engineer a boat that would float, and stay afloat once weights were added. We ended the day with an egg drop challenge. Students had to use the supplies provided to create a protective cover to prevent their egg from breaking when dropped from a high point. The kids enjoyed the hands on activities and stayed engaged all day. STEM activities are a hit at SLC! #SLC #RSD #EducateEquipEmpower

On Wednesday, SLC students went kayaking on Lake Dardanelle. Students were able to go on a 30 minute kayaking tour to explore the lake and wildlife up close! What a fun, hands on exploration and experience for these students. #SLC #RSD #LakeDardanelle #EducateEquipEmpower

At SLC, students earn Fun Friday points as a positive behavior reward system. This past Friday we had 22 students earn enough points to participate in Fun Friday. Since it was also Cinco de Mayo, we had a fun celebration! Thank you to the ESL Department for supplying the games and decorations for our Cinco de Mayo festivities! #SLC #RSD #ESL #EducateEquipEmpower #AchievingExcellenceTogether
